A mass of dirty water that flooded a Pembroke business road has been contained — although a foul odour from underground persisted yesterday along Bakery Lane.According to workmen at the 120ft drainage hole, the effluent that surged out when drilling commenced on Wednesday was pungent marsh water.“I know it’s a mess but it had to be done,” said Rayclan Limited manager George Sousa, adding that business had returned to normal — except for the smell.The drainage was ordered at the BAS Building to alleviate overflows from an outdated and clogged cess pit.Added Mr Sousa: “When they had to come down and empty that pit three times a week, that was really smelly. So I don’t mind what they are doing now.”BAS employees estimated that the new drainage would be functioning within a matter of days.A strongly sulphurous odour managed to permeate the BAS offices upstairs, but workmen said the smell was gases from decayed plant matter, rather than sewage.BAS announced the purchase of the building earlier this year to house its subsidiary offices.A Buzz Cafe occupies the ground floor, and according to neighbouring businesses, the flood-prone road near Pembroke Canal had been plagued by cess pit overflows since January.The drainage work is being monitored by the Department of Health.
