Clean-up at Morgan’s Point is set to begin
Work has begun on Morgan’s Point, Premier Paula Cox has announced, with the site being cleared for developers this month.Asbestos removal at the site is scheduled to begin on October 8, with the area divided into allotments for phased work to take place alongside development.Up to 40 currently unemployed workers will be given the chance to get certified for working with asbestos, Ms Cox added — a task coordinated by the Office of Project Management and Procurement (OPMP) and the Department of Labour and Training.According to Janet Albion, Interim Director of the OPMP, the asbestos is to be stored in new containers at the Government sites on Quarry Road and Southside. Removal is expected to take six to nine months. The plan for Morgan’s Point includes refurbishment of existing buildings, rather than tearing them down, and Ms Albion said she hoped to see that work commencing before the asbestos removal was completed. In the meantime, the Premier said: “We can no longer allow unauthorised entry to, or unauthorised storage on the site”.Ms Cox said that, for safety reasons, she didn’t yet know of a date when the public might be allowed back on to Morgan’s Point.“In the next few weeks, the OPMP will set up a dedicated website to allow the public to see progress on the site,” she said. “The website will also include links to the developer’s site, when it comes available.”
