Hog farmer worried by rocketing feed costs
Farmer Tom Wadson remains hopeful that feed costs for his pigs will go back down as he continues to look for help from the outside to maintain their quality of living.Costs for Bermuda’s iconic Spanish hog food has risen 30 percent in the last month, a substantial amount in the current economic climate.A year of brutal drought over much of the US has sent the cost of the hogs’ organic feed skyrocketing across many regions. To add strain to his pockets, the Bermuda Ossabaw hogs are due to have litters soon at the Wadson farm.“My feed went up by 30 percent in one month and we are hoping it may come down,” said Mr Wadson. “We are looking at various ways to sustain the animals financially, but there appears to be limited interest.”Mr Wadson confirmed he has received offers of food from locals, but was adamant that the genetically modified organisms (GMO) found in certain foods weren’t conducive for his pure bred animals.“I could use cheaper, GMO feeds, although this could possibly affect their reproductive capacity as these grains are grown using “Roundup ready” technology.“Roundup has been proven to chelate a number of metals in the soil, thus seriously compromising it’s ability to grow good feed and food.“We have been feeding non GMO natural and organic grains ever since we started our livestock and poultry operations for exactly these reasons.”It was understood that a new home was urgently needed for the animals due to pressure from costs, but Mr Wadson said that was never an option.“Not for one second were we looking for another place to put these pigs, we have ample land and the pigs are an integral part of our land management programme.“A number of persons have responded in this regard, too bad it is not the issue.“If I was to sell them what g?arantees their survival? Something for nothing is usually of little value.”
