Founded by scientists and insurers, Bermuda’s Risk Prediction Initiative is kept busy in a jurisdiction known for risk and for hurricanes.Now the group, dubbed RP12.0, has opened a forecast competition with up to $5,000 on offer — aimed at taking advantage of the technique of “crowdsourcing”.Based on the notion that a wide range of independent forecasts tend to be better off than any individual model, the competition will call on researchers and weather enthusiasts to submit their predictions for tropical storm, hurricane and major hurricane landfalls for six regions in the US.Forecasts will be evaluated at the end of the hurricane season.The competition is now open, and its first of four annual rounds will expire on December 1.To take part, see: http://rpi.bios.edu/forecast/forecast_rules.
