Sewage outfall pipe has no leaks

The Island’s offshore sewage outfall appears to be leak-free, according to the Corporation of Hamilton.

The Seabright outfall on the South Shore in Paget made headlines after an influx of waste hit shore in the form of “grease balls”, prompting questions as to the integrity of the pipe itself.

The concrete pipe extends 700 metres along the sea floor from the shoreline just west of Hungry Bay, Paget.

Corporation of Hamilton secretary Ed Benevides said the outfall was subject to regular inspections, along with water testing.

There is “no current work” on the outfall, Mr Benevides said, since no breaks have been reported along the pipe — which was repaired in 2010.

Options for the sea-dumping pipe, which caught flak from the environmental group Greenrock, have included extending the outfall.

Plans to improve the outfall are being “actively discussed with our consultants and stakeholders”, Mr Benevides said.
