A possible bald eagle sighting has been reported from the West End, with locals urged to keep a lookout for the rare visitor.

Former conservation officer David Wingate said farmer Junior Hill had spotted a powerfully built raptor on Friday fitting the description of the bird of prey.

A “very large bird” was also spotted over St George’s Harbour this weekend, and bird-watchers at Spanish Point spotted what may have been a swallow-tailed kite or a bald eagle.

“It probably would not stay here very long, but you never know,” Dr Wingate said. “A lot of migrants are exhausted when they get here and will need to feed up and get their strength back before moving on.”

Bald eagles have distinctive white heads, white tails, yellow bills and yellow legs.
