Multiple species of fish have been found floating on the surface of the water, according to the Department of Environmental Protection.

Black groupers are among the dead or dying fish discovered around the reef platform — a phenomenon often associated with warm sea temperatures and plankton blooms.

People are being urged not to eat any fish found floating, and to report any observations of dead fish to the Fisheries Department by e-mail at fisheries@gov.bm.

Environmental Protection, which is investigating in consultation with the Department of Conservation Services, released a statement saying: “There is currently insufficient data to offer a definitive explanation for the recent die-off events, all possible causes are under active consideration.

“In an abundance of caution the public is advised not to eat any.

“The Department is extremely interested in obtaining a live, floating specimen for analysis.”

People are urged to contact Fisheries Officer Joanna Pitt on 239-2326 or the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo at 293-2727.
