Blue bags building up at recycling facility
The unsightly pile of blue bags outside the Devon Springs Recycling Centre continues to mount due to continuing operational problems at the Material Recovery Facility.
The Devonshire site was badly damaged during Hurricane Gonzalo in 2014.
In September, the Ministry of Public Works said the necessary repair parts were expected to arrive on the Island within two weeks, and that it anticipated that repairs would take about a week to complete.
However, the MRF machinery malfunctioned, leading to another backlog of recycling.
A spokeswoman for the ministry said “the new parts have been ordered”, but did not provide an expected timeline for repairs.
The public are advised to continue recycling, with materials such as vehicle batteries and air conditioners still being regularly shipped out to the American recyclables market.
The latest garbage and recycling schedule is due be delivered Island-wide this month.
