An environmental charity is inviting ocean conservation groups to apply for funding to boost more initiatives.

The Marooned Ocean Foundation was launched in June 2018 by Adam Johnson, a Bermudian lawyer with a passion for the ocean, to raise funds for conservation projects on the island, with a view to broadening its horizons overseas.

The charity raises funds through the sale of T-shirts featuring photography by Bermudian drone operator Conor Outerbridge and recently donated $1,000 to the Living Reef Foundation, which focuses on growing coral larvae in a hatchery at Coney Island.

Mr Johnson will be selling T-shirts at Tabs clothing store on Reid Street and wants to launch an online clothing shop in North American.

“This project helps to support the resilience of our reef platform and put Bermuda on the map for its ocean conservation efforts,” he said.

“If there is anyone on the island who is working in this field and could utilise support and funding, please get in touch.

“If there are any retail shops or other individuals who desire to support Marooned on our journey to helping our world oceans, please get in touch.

“There are school programmes where we can get kids involved in exploring the ocean and similar projects. The team is excited to find new ways to uplift the Bermudian community, all while supporting our oceanic home.”

As well as raising funds for the Living Reef Foundation, the Marooned Ocean Foundation has led various events at Alchemy Fitness, courtesy of owner Rupert Henagulph, to promote ocean-focused sustainable living on the island.

The charity has also organised a beach clean-up with the help of One Communications and plans to organise similar efforts in future.

Mr Johnson said that protecting Bermuda’s reefs was a focus of the charity. “Bermuda’s reef is healthy when compared to much of the world’s reef,” he said.

“Even if you look at it solely from an economical standpoint, our coral reefs are important to protect. They are hugely important for our tourism industry and fishing industry. It is our goal at Marooned to work with others towards keeping the reef around Bermuda healthy.

“This can take on many forms, such as beach clean-ups, knowledge on using reef-safe sunscreen, and general education about living sustainably in Bermuda.”
