Premier - ’thoughts and prayers’ with St Vincent as volcano threatens
The Caribbean island of St Vincent, where many Bermudians can trace their roots, faces a significant evacuation order as the volcano La Soufrière shows signs of impending eruption.
Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, issued the order for the red zone in the north of the island, where the volcano has shown strengthening activity.
David Burt, the Premier, said the thoughts and prayers of Bermudians were with the more than 110,000 residents of the West Indian nation.
Mr Burt said: “The Caricom Family is united in its desire to provide support where necessary and, like our regional partners, we continue to hope for the best.
“I will be making contact with Prime Minister Gonsalves to personally convey these well wishes.”
La Soufrière last erupted in 1979.
The heightened alert today follows days of increased seismic and volcanic activity.
Residents in the at-risk area were warned to “be ready” while safe areas are prepared.
Bermudians with family ties to St Vincent and the Grenadines include Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier.
