Book gives peek into young people’s relationship with Earth
A collection of more than 250 letters written by children expressing their thoughts on the environment has been published in book form.
The essays were written by Warwick Academy primary students in 2007 to mark Earth Day.
Neletha Butterfield, who was the Minister of Education at the time, read each letter before responding to each student.
After preserving them for more than 15 years, Dr Butterfield has printed the letters in Earth Day Expressions from the Soul.
Dr Butterfield said: “These students’ expressions are a testament to the future of our world, but also to the past.
“Earth Day Expressions from the Soul gives us a peek into the minds of young people and their relationship to the Earth. What are their hopes, their dreams, their wishes for this place we call home? ”
Dr Butterfield now lives in Jamaica where she works as an author. She has received numerous awards both locally and internationally for her work in the environment, community, business, church, educational system, prisons, leadership and as a motivational speaker.
As well as letters on how to save the planet, the book features colourful drawings by the students.
Should you need to know if your drawing is in the book as a past student of Warwick Academy there is a directory of names listed in the back of the book to review.
Dr Butterfield will be signing copies of the book at Brown & Co on Reid Street tomorrow between 11am and 3pm.
• Books are also available at the Bermuda Book Store and Care Learning Centre. Neletha Butterfield can also be contacted on 292-0915, 505-7837 or at nelethas@gmail.com
