Island environmental group gets international recognition
A local environmental group has received international recognition for its work in Bermuda.
In a recent article focused on Black-led environmental groups, Ebony magazine highlighted Guardians of the Reef and its founder, Weldon Wade.
The story described the group as an “environmental conservation organisation that takes protective actions to protect the island of Bermuda”.
It added: “Through beach clean-ups and education, the organisation encourages folks to be conscious about the way their own footprint impacts the planet.”
Other organisations highlighted included the Hip Hop Caucus, the Detroit Hives, the Black Farmers Index and the National Black Environmental Network, all of which are based in the United States.
Mr Wade expressed gratitude for the story on social media, writing that he was honoured to be included alongside other Black activists who are doing their part to protect the planet.
“From small everyday actions to grand preservation efforts, we all have a role to play in ensuring the wellbeing of our Earth,” he said.
“I'm honoured to be a part of a community that is working towards a more sustainable future for all.
“Thank you, Ebony Magazine, for shining a light on our collective efforts. Let's continue to inspire one another and make a positive impact on our planet.”
