Bluebird box builder receives government support
The Government has partnered with a young Bermudian environmentalist to install bluebird boxes in select parks across the island.
Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said the ministry was thrilled to team with Jaavaid Warren-Smith of TrueBermudaBluebird to move forward with the initiative intended to bolster the island’s bluebird population.
“This initiative exemplifies our commitment to preserving our natural heritage and underscores the Department of Parks' ongoing efforts to protect and enhance our environment,” Colonel Burch added.
A spokesman said the collaboration came about as a result of Mr Warren-Smith contacting the Department of Parks about the concept.
The spokesman said: “Mr Warren-Smith is known for his expertise in building bluebird houses using environmentally friendly materials and installation techniques involving rocks and sand instead of cement.
“These efforts align with the department's ongoing devotion to preserving and enhancing the natural environment of Bermuda.
“This marks the fourth consecutive year of Mr Warren-Smith’s bluebird house installation programme, which has shown promising results.”
Eastern bluebirds are native to Bermuda, but the local population has struggled over the past century because of a loss of habitat and the introduction of other species of birds, including sparrows, starlings and kiskadees.
The bluebirds now rely heavily on bluebird boxes designed to create safe spots to nest.
