A charity and a sports association are partnering to reduce waste at cricket games this summer.

Traci Burgess, executive director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful, said the organisation would promote recycling and minimise single-use plastic bags at this year’s three Eastern Counties cricket matches.

Stephen Douglas, president of the Eastern Counties Cricket Association, said the organisation was happy to work with KBB.

He said: “We believe in educating the community on the benefits of caring for the environment in an effort to keep our island home clean, put a stop to littering and preserve Bermuda's natural beauty.

“The steps that ECCA and Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club [where the matches will take place] are taking to reduce waste, provide county game guests with easy access to trash and recycling bins and promote the green event’s waste management plan really boils down to education and prevention.”

The first round of the Easterrn Counties is today at Sea Breeze Oval, where holders Bailey’s Bay face St David’s, starting at 10am.

Ms Burgess thanked the ECCA and Bailey’s Bay, as well as the Department of Waste Management and Recycle Bermuda for helping to bring the initiative to fruition.

KBB has also partnered with Wilmot’s Trucking throughout the cricket season to promote the “5 Rs” — rethinking personal habits, reducing waste, reusing eco-friendly products, refusing single-use plastics and recycling tin, aluminium and glass materials.

Paul Wilmot, from Wilmot’s Trucking, said: “We can all reduce, reuse and recycle in today to help save the future.”
