Montserrat expert to give next BUEI Island SOS talk
A series of discussions about how islands are working to tackle environmental issues will continue next month with a talk about disaster planning in Montserrat.
The Island SOS presentation series, launched by the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, focuses on innovative, sustainable ocean strategies embraced in other island nations.
The series will resume on August 6 with a talk from Lavern Ryan, founder of LRR Geospatial Consultancy, about the use of geographic information systems for environmental management and mapping.
A BUEI spokeswoman said the presentation’s topics of planning, mitigating the effects of natural disasters and land management will interest the Bermudian public.
“As our climate continues to change as a result of human impact and the use of fossil fuels, we are excited to hear more about the work of Ms Ryan and how GIS has had a positive impact on her community,” the spokeswoman said.
In addition to founding LRR Geospatial Consultancy, Ms Ryan is a GIS Manager at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Housing and the Environment in Montserrat.
The Island SOS talk series is held for an in-person audience at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium with the overseas guests presenting via video link.
Tickets cost $10 for BUEI members and $15 for non-members, while students with a valid ID can attend for free.
Those interested in attending can buy tickets on the events page of BUEI’s website or by calling the Oceans Gift Shop on 294-0204
