A Bermuda National Trust annual tradition continued in its 49th year yesterday, with participants covering 4.2 miles in Warwick for the Palm Sunday walk.

Undeterred by wind, rain and gale-force gusts as a blustery frontal system swept over the island, they set out from Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick with refreshments provided by John Barritt & Son.

Registration fees and donations fund the trust’s work in maintaining Bermuda’s natural and cultural heritage.

Karen Border, the executive director of the Bermuda National Trust, said officials were surprised and gratified at the turnout.

More than 900 people registered, with 700 people turning out.

Ms Border said: “We had a wonderful event despite the weather. They defied the wind and rain, which is testament to the fact that it’s a really loved community tradition.

“We were thrilled to see that level of support. People look forward to it — it’s a staple in the calendar, when they get to enjoy fresh air, exercise and learn more about parts of Bermuda they might not have seen.”
