A green software platform has partnered with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Education and the Ministry of Education to train students in environmental awareness.

The Bermuda Environmental Action programme is aimed at fostering “a broader public-private co-operation to encourage environmental stewardship and citizenship through education”, the software development firm Muuvment Ltd told The Royal Gazette.

Launched in 2019, Muuvment began as “a social-impact platform based in Bermuda” that helped businesses on the island to enhance their corporate social responsibility credentials.

The company said the BEA programme was designed to “increase understanding of environmental issues and inspire the community to participate in positive action, beginning with students”.

Walter Roban, the home affairs minister, said: ""Through the BEA programme, we aim to equip students in Bermuda with the knowledge and tools they need to tackle environmental issues.

“This initiative is not just about raising awareness, but also about preparing our students for the jobs of the future, where sustainability will be a key component.“

The BEA was launched during the Youth Climate Summit 2023.

It is now heading into a three-year educational programme, linking students with environmental charities and offering interactive learning.

The scheme offered a pilot environmental “hackathon” for students last month, and plans to offer a kinetic energy challenge with hands-on learning about renewable energy, a treasure hunt around the theme of community and environmental stewardship, and a bike pedal-power event promoting sustainable transportation and physical fitness.

Etana, a 13-year-old student at the Whitney Institute Middle School taking part in the programme, said she was “thrilled” at the opportunity to “take our passion for the environment beyond the classroom”.

Students can collaborate virtually and in person, she added.

As part of its public-private co-operation using education to encourage sustainability and care for the environment, BEA has partnered with Convex, an insurer and reinsurer that also handles digital risk management.

The company is the backer of several local charitable and education initiatives.

BEA said it was also in talks with additional partners, who would be announced “in due course”.
