A token of commitment to sustainability is being sought by the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, which would make it the island’s first hotel to gain the credential if successful.

The hotel is under review by Green Key International, an environmental organisation dedicated to promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry.

A spokeswoman said the resort was audited on December 27.

She added: “Green Key provides a well-proven framework for an establishment to work with its environmental management on sustainability issues, including awareness raising.

“The high environmental standards expected of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent on-site audits.”

The Hamilton Princess is Fairmont-managed, and the global chain has acquired the certification for many of its sister properties worldwide.

Its pursuit of sustainability over the years has included phasing out plastic straws and switching to more environmentally friendly LED lighting. In 2024, the hotel installed solar panels with BE solar.

The resort holds the Beyond Plastic Designation for the hotel, bars, restaurants and office spaces as well as its gym.

Also last year, the Hamilton Princess added refillable water stations, with two in the lobby of the main building, one at its infinity pool and another at the spa pool.

Stations were installed at the Princess Beach Club eatery and at the hotel’s tennis and pickleball courts.

Green Key stated that it had certified more than 6,000 establishments in more than 70 countries.

The certification is also eligible for hostels, small accommodations, campsites, holiday parks, restaurants and attractions.

It shows that a business agrees to meet the criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education, a global non-profit headquartered in Denmark.

Green Key states that certification is maintained through an on‐site audit conducted in years one and two, followed by every third year at a minimum.

The hotel expects the results of its audit by March.
