BUEI lecture to discuss bluebirds

Residents can learn more about bluebirds when a talk is held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute tomorrow.

Janice Hetzel, the Bermuda Audubon Society president, will lead The Wonderful World of Bermuda’s Bluebirds lecture in the Tradewinds Auditorium.

The eastern bluebird is thought to have arrived in Bermuda — its only breeding location outside North America — in the 1600s.

Loss of habitat, competition and predation from non-native birds and an increase in pesticides have reduced Bermuda’s bluebird population.

A BUEI spokeswoman said tomorrow’s lecture would highlight “the beauty and fascinating aspects” of the birds.

She added: “Attendees will learn about these remarkable birds and discover ways to contribute to their conservation and the preservation of their natural habitat.

“Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of Bermuda’s bluebirds and support their conservation efforts.”

Tickets for the lecture, which will begin at 7.30pm, are $20 for BUEI and Bermuda Audubon Society members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students with a valid ID.
