Youngsters turn out for Earth Day fundraiser
Several schools across the island have pitched in for an Earth Day fundraiser geared at raising environmental awareness and inspiring action.
Keep Bermuda Beautiful is celebrating Earth Day — which will be observed globally tomorrow — by engaging 15 schools under the theme of “Earth Day Grub Day”.
The charity encouraged pupils to wear casual clothes in “earth tone colours” for a small donation, with all proceeds supporting its education and youth engagement programmes.
This year’s participating schools include the Bermuda High School, Dalton E Tucker Primary, East End Primary, Francis Patton Primary, Harrington Sound Primary, Paget Primary, Sandys Middle School, St George’s Preparatory, Victor Scott Primary, Warwick Academy, West End Primary, West Pembroke Primary and Whitney Institute Middle School.
KBB said it was especially proud to highlight the efforts of Todd Fox, the principal of Francis Patton School, as well as the pupils and staff.
The school took an early lead in celebrating Earth Day through their “Green Future Initiative Week”, which ran during the week of March 10.
The pupils and staff took part in a series of activities that promoted sustainability and environmental consciousness.
They included wearing green in exchange for a $2 donation, selling green lemonade in reusable cups and observing a “Lights Out Day” to reduce energy use.
The school also hosted a “Walk to School Day” from Shelly Bay Field, as well as a full campus clean-up.
In the student-led initiative, Year 8 Head Leaders donated all funds raised to support KBB’s mission.
The charity said the pupils’ efforts exemplified the power of student voices in driving change and creating a cleaner, greener, more beautiful Bermuda for all.
