Big Red Machine almost sets another track record

On form: Colin Mello?s stud Big Red Machine.

Big Red Machine lived up to its name during the last round of harness racing at Vesey Street.Colin Mello’s seven-year-old stud tore up the racetrack in the second heat of the Free for All to come to within one fifth of a second of shattering the track record he currently holds.Earlier this month Big Red Machine set a new track record of 1.02 flat, besting the previous mark he also held by two fifths of a second.Mello’s horse was pipped by a nose at the line in the first Free for All Heat by Edward Roque’s GV Crystal Ball. But there would be no denying Big Red Machine glory in the second heat that he won convincingly.“I didn’t want to go fast with him but he wanted to go fast,” Mello said. “I was trying to keep him a little slow but he was really pulling so I said ‘buddy, if you want to really go, then go’.“I figured his time was fast because when I looked back I was seven or eight lengths in front of everybody so I figured it was a good time, but not that fast. This horse is just amazing.”There are many who feel that the best is still yet to come from Big Red Machine. Mello, though, prefers to keep his feet planted firmly on the ground and take matters all in stride.“Everybody keeps telling me he can go faster, but I’m just going to leave it up to him because it’s whatever he wants to do,” he said. “I pretty much just sit there for the ride.“I can’t take much of the credit because it’s easy when you have a good horse who pretty much does it all on his own.”Mello does, however, feel that horses have the potential to post faster times with improved facilities at Vesey Street.“I think if we had a bigger racetrack we will see a lot of these horses go a lot faster,” he said.Meanwhile, also enjoying success at Vesey Street last weekend were women drivers Andrea Westerfield and Kirista Rabain who were among a host of double heat winners.Westerfield won two heats in the 1.05 and 1.06/1 time bar with Real Lady Like and Mr Indiana. Rabain had two wins in the 1.06/2 and 1.07/2 and 1.07/3 and 1.09/3 time bars on Nite Dreamer and Crown’s Jewel.Other double heat winners included Cameron Harris, Darico Clarke, EJ Carrerio and Thomas Whited.Harness racing resumes at Vesey Street tomorrow night, beginning at 7pm.
