Equestrian trio in Harness challenge

Bermuda Equestrian Centre will play host to a unique harness race tonight.Professional overseas show jumpers Patrick Nisbett, Ki Minors and Raishun Burch will face off for bragging rights in an exhibition race in the 1.09/31.1⅓ time bar following the night’s intermission.Nisbett became the first Bermudian showjumper to compete at the FEI World Equestrian Games last year and more recently he represented the Island at the Pan Am Games in Mexico.Minors currently competes in Florida while University student Burch is regularly based in Germany where he appears in international events.Micheal Rodriguez, Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) president, reckons it’s anyone’s guess which of the trio will claim the victory after all is said and done at the track.“I think all three of them have actually done a Powder Puff Race before and so it should be interesting,” he said. “It could be anybody’s game; all three of them ride well and know how to control the horses.”The trio have returned to the Island to take part in this weekend’s Bermuda Equestrian Federation (BEF) Welcome Home Show at the Botanical Gardens. The event is a fund raiser to help cover costs to send a local rider to next year’s Olympic Games and a junior rider to train overseas next summer.Given that harness racing and show jumping go hand-in-hand, Rodriguez figured it would be a great idea to invite the likes of Nisbett to try his luck at harness racing.“We are all one big community and we thought it would be a nice highlight to have our international riders here competing this weekend to race on our track for fun,” he added. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, actually. Also taking part in this weekend’s BEF Welcome Home Show at Botanical Gardens, that gets underway at 9am today, are showjumper Jill Terciera and Annabelle Collins, who will put on a dressage demonstration.Tonight’s scheduled harness races at Vesey Street will commence at 6pm.
