Big Red romps to another harness racing record
And for good reason after smashing the track record for the second time in his career with the unstoppable Big Red Machine.Mello’s stud ran a blistering 1.0¼ in the second heat of the Free for All ‘A’ to shave one fifth of a second off the previous mark of 1.02 flat that American Devon Slathvaugh set just over a month ago with Big Red Machine. In what has now become customary, Mello chose not to take all the credit himself.“Big Red Machine is just an extraordinary horse, that’s all I can say,” he said. “He pretty much does it all himself.“I pretty much let him do what he wanted to do and from the start line I popped the plug and pushed him home.“I had seen fast times all night so I figured I’d just let him run.“The conditions were also good for racing. It was a little humid, but not hot.”Mello broke Catrina Sims’ track record (1.0⅔) with Big Red Machine last year before American pair Daryl Miller and Slathvuagh came along and raised the bar with the same horse.“He ‘s done (broke the record) it with everyone else but to do it with me driving is extra special,” Mello said. “I am really over the moon because this is something I’ve always wanted.”Mello could not have asked for a better time for his horse to be rounding into the top form with the Boxing Day Stakes races just around the corner.“I didn’t want to push him hard with the Stakes Races coming up soon,” he said. “But he had his own thoughts about what he wanted to do.”Mello, who reckoned his horse could go even faster if the track at Vesey Street was extended, also won the first heat of the Free for All ‘A’ and was also a heat winner in the 1.05/1 - 1.06/1 time bar with Real Lady Like.Suffering a leg in the Junior Free for All was rookie driver Catrina Stephens who ran a 1.05/4 with GV Special Dream in the 1.06/2-1.07/2 time bar. Also on the move was Darico Clarke who ran a 1.04/3 with Time After Time competing in the 1.05/1-1.06/2 time bar to advance to the Free for All.Arthur Hurst, Zinho Cooper, Philip Correia, EJ Carriero, Joe Viera, Tyler Lopes and Clarke were also among the weekend’s multiple heat winners.
