Rain rues Boxing Day meet

Harness racing fans were left to rue heavy rain that brought the popular Boxing Day Stakes Races to a grinding halt at Vesey Street over the Christmas Holiday.Only half of the day’s scheduled 33 races were completed when the heavens opened up and flooded the Devonshire racetrack.The Stakes Races for two, three and four-year-olds and aged horses were not held before heavy rain brought proceedings to a premature end.Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) officials have now rescheduled the Boxing Day Stakes Races for New Year’s Day, with all results from the heats that did take place at Vesey Street on Monday to be scratched.New Year’s Day will see drivers in four separate age divisions compete for bragging rights with the eventual winners to be determined by combined average fastest times.The two-year-old Stakes Races features four Bermuda bred horses that will compete in two heats, while the same amount will compete in the scheduled two heats in the three-year-old Stakes Races.There are only two horses registered in the four-year-old Stakes Races that will comprise of two heats, while the aged division features as many as nine horses that will compete in three heats.Among this year’s pre-race favourites is Colin Mello’s seven-year-old stud, Big Red Machine, that set a new track record (1.0¼) in his previous outing at Vesey Street.
