Special Irish equals world record in Indiana
M/R Special Irish has lived up to its name in Goshen, Indiana.The harness pony, co-owned by local drivers Lee Raynor Jr and his son Sergio, covered the half mile racetrack in 0:58.4 to break the four-year-old mare’s track record (0:59.) previously held by IC’s Amberock who is owned by Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) executives Arnold and Robin Manders.M/R Special Irish’s blistering time at Goshen also equalled the world record for a mare on a half mile track held by IC’s Amberock.Raynor’s harness pony achieved the feat with American driver Dale Miller in the sulky.M/R Special Irish has achieved numerous successes over the past three years.During that period she’s won a remarkable five stake races, broke the three -year-old mare’s record (1:03) on the five, sixteenth racetrack at Nappannee and equalled the three-year- old world record (1:05) for a mare on a half mile track at Goshen.Former Southampton Rangers cricketer Raynor said his mare’s remarkable achievements have surpassed his expectations.“Over the last three years this horse has accomplished way more than I ever expected and I am very proud and extremely happy,” he said. “The accomplishments we have been able to achieve with her are phenomenal and beyond our wildest dreams. She is definitely a special horse.”M/R Special Irish will be back in action at this weekend’s Indiana Breeders Stake Races at Nappannee.“Hopefully there’s more to come because she is definitely a special mare,” said Raynor, who will attend this weekend’s event in Indiana.Incidentally, American driver Miller was also at the helm of the Manders’ colt, Cherokee Ironman, that set a new world record (0:58.4) for a three-year -old on the half mile track at Goshen last month. Cherokee Ironman is the full brother of the Manders’ mare IC’s Amberock.“I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Bermuda horses and I take my hat off to Arnold and Robin Manders who have two phenomenal horses,” Raynor said. “You can’t say enough about their horses.“They have been blessed to be able to pick a fantastic horse with great genetics and be associated with top trainer Darrell Miller who has also been the key to this success.”Former cricketer Manders took over the helm of DHPC at the association’s last AGM after predecessor Michael Rodrigues stood down from the top post.His wife Robin is the association’s current secretary.The 2012-13 domestic harness racing season is due to commence September 21 at Vesey Street.
