Roque wants to take her sport ‘to the next level’

Making history: Suzanne Roque is the Driving Horse and Pony Club’s first female president

Suzanne Roque has never been one to blow her own trumpet.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the wife of veteran harness driver Eddie Roque downplays being the first female president of the Driving Horse and Pony Club.

Roque was elected to the top post after predecessor Arnold Manders resigned at the association’s annual general meeting this month.

Rather than get all caught up in making history, Roque chooses instead to put all of her energy and emphasis on catering to those she serves and taking the sport “to the next level”. A vision she shares with her fellow committee members.

“We have a diverse and experienced group of people who bring new ideas to the table and all share the same vision of getting the sport to grow to be bigger and better,” Roque said.

A big part of that vision is bolstering numbers at the Vesey Street racetrack at both junior and senior levels.

“There are a lot of horses on the Island and we are hoping to get as many of them back out there as possible,” Roque said.

“We are hoping to get the old drivers back out driving and more junior drivers involved in the sport also, and we are confident we can achieve this objective.”

The remainder of the new DHPC administration consists of Andy Stoneham, the vice president, Bettina Truran, the secretary, Patricia Peniston, the treasurer, and committee members Lee Raynor Jr, Robert Davis, Cameron Harris and Mark Lindo.

“I think we have a great team and are all very positive and concentrating in the future,” Roque added.

The 2015-2016 harness racing season begins in September.

“The season is starting in September and we are looking forward to some exciting racing and seeing all of the spectators at the track,” Roque said. “These are very exciting times.”
