Eddie Roque adamant best is yet to come from record-breaking pony
Eddie Roque believes the best is yet to come from his harness racing pony, MI’s Where’s the Party, after breaking his own world record and equalling another with driver Candyce Martins at the Nappanee Raceway in Indiana at the weekend.
The pair posted a blistering 1min 1sec on the way to victory to shave three fifths of a second off the previous mare world record on a five-16th track they already held and grab a share of the overall world record at the track during last Saturday’s racecard.
“She held the record for a year, 1min 0.4sec, and then she was tied for the world record for all the horses,” Roque told The Royal Gazette. “Then about three weeks ago a pony went in a 1:00.5 so we had to do a bit more homework and ultimately came up with the number.
“We matched it [overall world record] but I think we can go even faster because she is an awesome mare. A six-year-old and she’s still climbing.
“My horse has been getting consistently faster since she was a two-year-old. Every week we go the same time or just as close to record time.”
Martins and MI’s Where’s the Party had momentum heading into the weekend having defended their Aged Stakes title at the facility earlier in the week.
“We won the Aged Stakes Race at the same track but it was different conditions,” Roque added.
“It was wet and mucky and we still were able to come through and win.”
Roque’s Indiana-bred pony holds multiple world records having also set the overall world record of 57.3 on a half-mile track in Goshen, Indiana, last year with Martins again at the helm.
“Goshen is a different configuration so you only go once around whereas this one [Nappanee Raceway] you go a lap and a half,” Roque added.
“With the turns that’s what slows it down but she [MI’s Where’s the Party] is almost doing the time for the five-16th that she did on the half-mile track last year.
“She is putting in the training and it’s paying off.”
Martins and MI’s Where’s the Party set the previous mare world record and equalled the previous overall world record at Nappanee Raceway, that stood at 1:00.4 in July 2022.
Martins continues to make the most of an opportunity to showcase her talents at this level since accepting an invitation from Roque to compete in the United States last year.
