Kiwon Waldron achieves impressive sweep on different ponies
Kiwon Waldron enjoyed a highly successful day at the track after producing a clean sweep of victories with different ponies during the last round of harness racing at the National Equestrian Centre.
The 23-year-old driver won both heats in the 1:04 and faster and 1:04/1 – 1:06/1 time bars with stallions Special Gold and Special Tux.
“We had some luck this weekend, it was pretty good,” Waldron told The Royal Gazette.
“The conditions were actually quite ideal. They seemed pretty good, it was nice and sunny.
“Special Gold was pretty sharp and did his job quite well, so there’s no complaints there.
“Special Tux’s performance was quite good. He came from a long way back and was able to pull off the wins.
“They are both starting to come into themselves real good now and hopefully it’s just up from here.”
Waldron and Special Gold posted the day’s fastest time of 1:02/4 on the way to victory in the opening heat in the 1:04 and faster time bar, which was four fifths of a second slower than the season’s fastest time of 1:02 flat they achieved last month.
“It was a good weekend, we got two victories and I’m thankful,” Special Gold’s co-owner Lee Raynor Jr said.
“We are trying to go as fast as we can go and were hoping to go a little faster, but for a number of different reasons it didn’t materialise, so we are hopeful as we go on between now and the end of the season we can go faster.”
Reigning Champion of Champion War Machine and driver Darico Clarke did not compete during last weekend’s race card at Vesey Street.
Mello Family’s gelding has missed several races this season through injury but appears to be rounding into good form having won both heats in the 1:04 and faster time bar the previous weekend.
