Kiwon Waldron savours more glory in Indiana
Kiwon Waldron found his way back on the podium after securing his second win in standardbred racing in the United States on Saturday night.
The professional harness driver came from behind to steer five-year-old gelding Sweet Boy Ben to victory in the ninth heat at Harrah’s Hosier Park racetrack in Anderson, Indiana.
Starting in the four-hold position, Waldron swiftly moved into second where he remained most of the way around the seven-furlong circuit before finding an extra gear heading down the home stretch to pip rivals Kyle Wilfong (Swingforthefences) and Ricky Macomber Jr (Finish Strong) in an exciting photo finish for his second win in four starts.
“Another good night of racing and on paper it looked kind of like how it might have worked out,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“The horse is a pleasure to drive; he’s real easy.
“I was lucky to get out late, and once he saw an open road he did the rest.”
It was second time the Bermudian has pipped rival Wilfong in a photo finish this season, having done so sitting behind three-year-old stallion Airbus to clinch a maiden win in standardbred racing at the same racetrack last month.
“It came down to a nail-biter again with the same driver, Kyle Wilfong,” Waldron added.
“He was like, ‘what’s the odds that it’s another dead heat’? But I am glad that we ended up getting it done this time.”
