Artemis Racing submits Morgan’s Point plan
Plans to erect the Artemis Racing headquarters on Morgan’s Point have been sent to the Department of Planning as the team prepares for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.
The Swedish team has proposed the instillation of several temporary structures near the end of the Southampton peninsula, with a floating dock structure to the south.
According to the application, three aluminium-framed buildings would be erected on an area already paved with concrete. Two of the buildings would be used for storage, housing the team’s sailing equipment, while the third would include the main team office. Meanwhile a mobile crane will be placed on the site to aid with the boat launch process.
All of the structures are intended to be removed after the America’s Cup has ended.
The application states that in addition to the sailing team, Artemis Racing intends to bring its entire Research and Development team to the Island from California to help them prepare for the event.
“This activity is critical to the development of the America’s Cup technology to be used by the team and are fundamental to its operation in Bermuda,” a section of the application states. “Prototypes will be investigated, tested and adjusted in real time with feed back from the team.”
The move to Morgan’s Point was formally announced in June, with Artemis team manager Iain Percy saying: “Our sailing operations will be conducted in the Royal Naval Dockyard during the 35th America’s Cup in 2017, and we are very excited to be a part of what will be a fantastic event. However, the size of this unique historical location at Morgan’s Point will enable us to relocate our full operational base to Bermuda much earlier.”
Artemis Racing has said that it hopes to be fully operational at Morgan’s Point by early next year.
