Cup Match Extravaganza to bring festive spirit east

St George’s plans to get into the Cup Match spirit tonight with its annual Cup Match Extravaganza.

The free event, originally launched to bring the community together in support of the East End team, has evolved to become a popular attraction in the tourism calendar.

Quinell Francis, the Mayor of St George, noted that this year’s event will celebrate the 190th anniversary of emancipation in Bermuda.

She said: “While the Cup Match Extravaganza serves as a rally for our community, it also holds a deeper significance as a public acknowledgement of the historic cricket match it represents and the heritage of emancipation and Mary Prince.”

Candy-Lee Foggo, the town manager, said that this year’s event was bolstered through the St George’s Project, a partnership with the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce aimed at increasing visitor satisfaction.

She said: "Fire Wayne will headline the event, with Power Girl and DJ Chubb serving as emcees for the respective teams, Somerset and St George's.

“Our performers’ showcase will include St George’s Original Dancerettes, Tara Sapien Fire Dancing, Rated E, and Bermuda Dance Academy, with DJ Iceman giving the show its flow.

“We’ll have classic treats and snacks from Ashley's, Bermuda Cup Cake Company and Hot Dog Delights. True Reflections and Demeka Wholesale will also be on-site with mementos.

“Recognising our large resident population, we'll have a dedicated Fun Zone featuring SpongeBob, Rock Climb, and Slide Fun Castles for the families.”

Ms Francis added that this year organisers also put together a series of festive competitions including a fishcake eating contest, sponsored by Food Hub, a ginger beer drinking contest, sponsored by Barritt’s, and Gombey dancing.

The Corporation will award an Extravaganza Trophy to the best-performing team, whether that is St George's or Somerset.

The fun is scheduled to start at 6.30pm with free entry and free parking at Tiger Bay.
