PLP issues message of Cup Match unity
The governing party has hailed Cup Match as “a time filled with excitement, tradition and community spirit”, wishing all “a joyful and safe celebration”.
The Progressive Labour Party said this year’s Annual Classic commemorated the 190th anniversary of emancipation, “a milestone that underscores the deep historical significance of this event”.
“Cup Match is more than just a cricket match; it's a cherished occasion for us to come together, honour our heritage, and enjoy the company of family and friends.
“Cup Match is a celebration of our rich heritage, reflecting on Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day, honouring our journey towards freedom and equality.
“As this year marks 190 years of emancipation, it is a testament to our enduring spirit and unity. It's a time to remember our past, celebrate our present, and look forward to a brighter future for all Bermudians.”
The statement added: “The spirit of Cup Match is one of unity and togetherness. Let us use this holiday to foster goodwill, spread joy, and support one another.
“As we enjoy the cricket matches, beach outings, and family gatherings, let us also remember to be considerate of our neighbours and the environment.
“Celebrate responsibly, stay safe, and make wonderful memories with your loved ones. Together, we can ensure that Cup Match remains a time of joy, reflection, and unity for generations to come.”
The party urged the community to keep hydrated and protected from the sun, and to be mindful of road safety whether driving or walking, adding: “Do not drink and drive, and always be vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists.
“Use this time to strengthen family bonds and connect with your community. Celebrate responsibly and ensure that our youth understand the significance of Cup Match and its historical importance to Bermuda.”
