Triangle Challenge recognised for sustainability
An international sporting body has praised the 2024 Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge for its work to ensure social and environmental sustainability.
The Council for Responsible Sport recently certified the January event for demonstrating a commitment to responsible event production in planning, communications, procurement, resource management, access, equity and community legacy.
According to a press statement, Rico Tesio, the third-party verifier who provided on-the-ground documentation assistance during the 2024 event, told organisers: “Your commitment to sustainability, particularly in the unique context of an island nation and a volunteer-led event, is a powerful example of community-driven efforts shaping a more sustainable future.
“We’re excited to see how the event continues to grow and evolve while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability.”
The Council for Responsible Sport is a non-profit organisation created to help sporting event organisers produce more socially and environmentally conscious events since 2007.
Among the events that have received the highest level of certification from the body are the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, the US Olympic Track and Field Trials, the IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships and the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Four Basketball Championships.
The organisation states on its website that certified events have “proven their methods to meet enhanced standards for social and environmental responsibility are not only creating more livable communities where they work and play, but showing the way for others to do the same”.
The event’s organisers celebrated the announcement, crediting the support of sponsors and community partners including Aspen Bermuda Limited, the race’s Official Sustainability Partner, Butterfield and Vallis, Bermuda Craft Brewing, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, the Corporation of Hamilton and Recycle Bermuda.
Ali Hochberg, the event’s director of sustainability, said: “Sport has the power to inspire positive change.
“We wanted to use our international event as an opportunity to begin working with stakeholders to promote sustainability and best practices in the broader community.”
Adam Barboza, vice-president of corporate social responsibility and sustainability at Aspen Bermuda Limited, added: “This highlights the organisers’ aspirations to unite various stakeholders for a more positive environmental and social impact for Bermuda and Aspen is proud to support this work.”
The Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge is set to return in January with the Butterfield Mile on January 17, the BF&M 5k and 10k Run/Walk on January 18 and the PwC Bermuda Marathon, Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay on January 19.
