Charity walk for injured teenager hailed a success
Friends and supporters of an injured young musical artist came together at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club at the weekend as part of a continuing drive to raise money in support his recovery.
More than 100 people signed up in advance for the second annual family fun walk, run and roll early on Saturday to benefit Zhamir Denbrook-Pitt — while even more signed up on the spot.
Mr Denbrook-Pitt, a promising young artist, suffered a spinal injury on July 26 last year when he crashed in St David’s on his way home from cricket trials.
Doctors initially thought he could have been paralysed after shattering vertebrae in his neck.
Since then, his family and friends have pitched in with the goal of raising £210,000 (about $281,000) to support his battle to recover.
Rheba Simmons, his aunt, told The Royal Gazette she was pleased by the turnout, stating: “We had about 110 registrations before today and we have had at least 20 registrations this morning so far.
“The campaign is going well. We have a lot of supporters who came last year and have continue to support us now. Everyone is on our team, helping and just being there to support emotionally.”
She added that while Mr Denbrook-Pitt was still receiving rehabilitation for his injuries, his spirits remained high, buoyed by the encouragement of family, friends and the wider community.
“The support that everyone is showing is keeping him going,” she said. “He is in rehab, trying to get better, but it is a long journey.”
Ms Simmons said that the campaign, marked on social media with the tag #ZhamirStrong, had garnered support from across the island, with more events in the planning.
“We are having a golf tournament on October 19 at Mid Ocean Club, something a little different for a different crowd,” she said.
“That also had a good turnout last year, and we are hoping for the same this year.”
