Peace concert to recognise gun victims on Remembrance Day
A community activist hopes to unite the island against gun violence with a free peace concert at Bernard Park.
Shane Powell, of Bermuda Squad Entertainers, said the show for the Remembrance Day holiday on Monday was intended to remember those lost from violence in the community, including Taylor “Taylor Made” Grier, the cofounder of BSE.
“It is a free family fun day and peace concert, which was built around Taylor, who passed away from gun violence,” Mr Powell said.
“We stood against gun violence before it happened to him. We were advocating through Bermuda Squad to stop violence and then he ended up dying through violence.
“I wanted to keep that energy and his name alive. Not just his memory but the memory all of those who have died.”
Mr Powell said that while November 11 was used to remember those lost in war, it was important to also remember those who have lost their lives to the gun violence that has torn the community apart.
“Our hope is that this gathering will offer a positive space for connection and unity, reinforcing a shared commitment to peace here in Bermuda,” he said.
Mr Powell urged the public to come out to show their support for an end to gun violence and to remember those they had lost.
“Violence has devastated everyone from the old down to the young,” he said.
“We have to, in our efforts as Bermuda Squad, rebuild from the ground up to try to show the youth that there is a different way.
“If we don’t honour the people who died through gun violence and talk about it, then in some sense it gets forgotten and then it becomes a repetitive stream of violence.”
The Taylor Made Peace Concert and Family Fund Day, sponsored by the Ministry of National Security and Sound Concepts, will start at 11am and continue until 6pm.
