Nervous times: Heyliger finished sixth in her heat in Rio (File photograph by Sideya Dill)

Rebecca Heyliger said she was disappointed with her performance in the 50 metres freestyle after failing to set a personal best at the Olympic Games today.

The 23-year-old posted a time of 26.54 sec — her personal best is 26.13 — to finish sixth in heat six at the Aquatics Stadium.

Karen Torrez of Bolivia won the heat in 26.16 with Naomi Ruele of Botswana second in 26.23. Elinah Phillip, of British Virgin Islands, was third in 26.26.

Heyliger said she had expected to finish in the top two.

“I wasn’t pleased with that time, and when I get nervous I tend to mess up my breakout [the final piece of the underwater when a swimmer transitions from kicking to swimming] and that happened again here,” she said.

“It’s just a learning experience and it was about four tenths off my personal best. It would have been a best time last summer but I was hoping to do way better than that.

“I think it was all on the breakout and my left arm left the streamline and from there it’s almost a complete stop. I had to try and speed up from there.”
