Big day ahead for Artemis and France

Welcome to Day 6 of the 35th America’s Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton.

Three teams are fighting for survival, SoftBank Team Japan, Artemis Racing and Groupama Team France. The Swedes have a tough match against Oracle Team USA and another against Team Japan. The Japanese must also race Emirates Team New Zealand.

Team France, could face a killing blow from Team New Zealand in the third match of the day. The Kiwis warm up in the first match today against Team Japan, who are barely holding on with their three points.

Land Rover BAR are idle today but they will be making upgrades and repairs and might take in some practice sound as well.

Winds should be south-southwest at around 10-15 knots. The day is shaping up as a repeat to earlier in the week a shifty breeze flowing over the hills of Somerset on to the Great Sound. Lots of lead changes are in the cards for today.

Day 5

There was no hope for Team France against Team Japan. They stay at two points. Team Japan moves up to three points.

Emirates Team New Zealand made a walk of it with Land Rover BAR. The New Zealand boat showed some foiling magic and was able to “mostly” foil both up and down the course in the five to seven-knot breeze. New Zealand sits atop the leaderboard of challengers.

Oracle Team USA came from behind against their design partners Team Japan to stay in the overall lead in the Qualifiers standings. The USA team started on their heels after needing to clear a late-entry penalty in the pre-start. Helmsman Jimmy Spithill and Team USA chipped away at Team Japan’s lead and at the fourth mark, made their move as they threw in an extra gybe to take the opposite gate. The strategic gamble paid off as Team USA passed the Japanese on the final upwind leg, earning the win.

Looking for something positive for the day, the BAR crew straightened out some daggerboard problems suffered in their match against Team New Zealand. They put together a series of good manoeuvres in their final match of the day against Team France, BAR took the two-point Team France at the finish by a small margin for the closest race of the day.
