Jimmy Spithill, the Oracle Team USA skipper, has vowed “to come out swinging” during today’s third and fourth races of the 35th America’s Cup Match presented by Louis Vuitton.

Oracle got their title defence off to a horrendous start, losing today’s opening two races with a luke-warm display they would rather quickly forget.

However, Spithill, who knows a thing or two about comebacks, is confident that his team will learn from their mistakes and bounce right back when racing resumes in the Great Sound.

“It was obviously a tough day,” Spithill said yesterday. “There’s a lot obviously we can take from today, a lot to be learnt and good news we are only one back.

“Clearly we were not sailing at our best but we also had our opportunities. Both races there was some chances but these guys [Emirates Team New Zealand] at the end of the day made fewer mistakes.

“We were far from our best today and we ‘re obviously going to put some hours in now, have a good look through all the video all the data, sharpen up and we will come out swinging tomorrow.

“I thought the guys did a good job to sort of hang tough and show the ability to come back.

“I think we saw just how a couple of times these guys built up a healthy lead and in the blink of an eye it’s back on again.

“But we need to sharpen up — and that’s what we will focus on tonight.”

Team New Zealand lead the first-to-seven series 1-0.

Oracle, the two-times defending champions, started the series with a one point advantage, which they earned as reward for winning the preceding Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers.
