Fresh skin, natural eyes and a pop of colour on the lips.

Make-up experts say it’s the look to go for this spring. It was a hit on the runway at New York Fashion Week last month.

Cynthia Morrison Eike is now on the Island sharing her tips as part of a special fashion event at AS Cooper’s.

“It’s all about the nude look, with fresh skin, natural eyes and a pop of colour on the lips for a little shock factor,” said Ms Eike, regional representative for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics.

“Hot pink, berries and orange are all big right now. That’s the look of the season and what was done at the fashion shows we did in New York. All the designers wanted that pop of colour.”

Fresh, glowing skin is essential if you want to pull the look off, she added.

“Healthy skin is very attractive no matter what age you are so the idea is to make skin look as plump as possible when trying out this look.

“You want to keep the rest of the face neutral because too many things at once look clown-like. Keep the focus on one area at a time.”

A full, smoky eye is more popular in autumn but women seem to prefer a simpler routine in the summer, Ms Eike said.

She recommended a tinted moisturiser with sunblock instead of a heavy foundation at this time of year.

Too many women ruin their look by putting too much make-up on, she added.

“Bobbi Brown is all about simplifying and providing the products and the knowledge to make every woman her own make-up artist. One thing I hope women realise is it’s much more simple than they think.

“Four different colours of eye shadows, two different colours of lip liner and five different steps to putting on eyeliner — it’s crazy.

“The classic eye is iconic to the Bobbi Brown look. It involves two shades of eye shadow and an eyeliner and mascara. That’s all you need to do a classic and clean look in five minutes.”

When Ms Eike is working at special events her make-up routine takes about 20 minutes.

She cuts that down to five in her downtime.

“I will make sure to use a tinted moisturiser, which not only gets the skins plumped up, but evens the complexion out,” she said.

“Then I use my concealer, shimmer brick, mascara and top it off with some lipstick.”

She recommends women with a particular beauty concern — be it sparse brows, under-eye circles or uneven skin tone — to invest some time in talking to a professional.

“Bobbi Brown has a good understanding of why women don’t like to shop at department stores,” Ms Eike said. “There are so many products out there and so many different brands and it’s so overwhelming.

“So what we have done is take the top five things that women are usually most concerned with and paired them down to lessons. You can do the five-minute instant pretty or 45 minute long-wear make-up look — and everything in between. If you just want to learn about your eyebrows it takes us ten minutes to show you how to fill them in and create a natural, full look.”

Ms Eike became a make-up artist in 1983, but her fascination with beauty products began long before that.

“Well, my mother tells me I used to watch her putting on her make-up as a child of two or three years old. I also used to eat her lipstick so she says make-up was in my blood, so to speak.

“[However my mother and grandmother] were from Spain and it’s very European to wear make-up. Women always dressed up from head to toe. They wore the gloves and the hats. Make-up was the final touch.”

Ms Eike will be available for consultations from now until Saturday at 6pm. To make an appointment call 295-3961 ext 411.

Cynthia's three make-up musts

Three make-up items Cynthia can't live without:

1. A good red lipstick. “If they only have time to do one thing, they put that lipstick on and look instantly done and finished.” Her favourite shade? A burnt red from Bobbi Brown's line.

2. Under-eye concealer. Cynthia said a brightening concealer provided an instant pick-me-up and worked wonders when applied over your make-up. “The first place that shows signs of fatigue is under the eyes,” she said. “The circles tend to get darker over the day, so by just putting on your concealer right over your make-up you can tidy it up for an instant freshness.” She recommends a tinted eye brightener.

3. Shimmer on the cheeks. Cynthia swears by Bobbi Brown's shimmer brick. “It's a bronzer and highlighter in one so instantly makes your skin look dewy with a hint of colour,” she said. It's one of the brand's most popular items. One is sold every 37 seconds somewhere in the world.
