Courtney has designs on fashion career
Courtney Clay considered entering her clothing designs in the Bermuda Fashion Festival for years but held off.
She just didn’t feel ready.
“Having reached a certain place in my life and gained some experience through fashion school, I decided to apply for it,” the 20-year-old said. “I thought it would be a great opportunity to be a part of a local fashion showcase, be mentored, gain great exposure and meet other local designers.”
She said it felt like “a dream come true” to have her clothing collection, Grace, featured in this year’s Local Designer Show.
Now her biggest challenge is hoping her creativity and inspiration will shine through.
Hannah Bibb, the assistant fashion director at Barneys, has been instrumental in helping her get to this point.
She’s given Miss Clay useful feedback on her collection and also a few life lessons.
“I’ve learnt that new people, places and adventures can bring change, as well as new perspective and ideas. I’ve also learnt that one has to be open to change,” she said.
She’s optimistic about the show and hopes it creates buzz around her brand, which will be released in July.
She describes it as vibrant — a mix of pop art with the tropical feel of an island.
“The inspiration behind my collection ranged from pop artist Andy Warhol to Bermuda tradition to Josephine Baker and Diana Ross.”
She’s also excited to see what doors open up after the show.
“I’ve been designing clothes for a few years now as I have been interested in becoming a designer since a young age,” Miss Clay said.
“A lot of work is required to make this showcase a success — everything from getting inspired to designing the perfect collection, destroying it and starting again. I am also getting fabric, dealing with the production of making the designs come to life and finally fitting and styling.
“It’s really like a business. This all can’t be done without a good team behind you.
“If I can manage my time wisely throughout the day I shouldn’t have to stay up too late, but I’m willing to work all hours to make this a success.
“I have already been working very hard and spending lots of time on my collection and plan to continue doing the same until the day of the show.”
