Unique look for all
In Bermuda, “resort” isn’t a season, it’s a way of life. “You don’t have to say I have an edgy fashion sense, I have a boho chic, or I’m modern prep. I think you can be a little of everything,” Miranda Conway said.
“In Bermuda, there are so many different social occasions and locations where you can try a bit of everything.”
That statement summarises her buying ethos for Regali Boutique at Tucker’s Point.
A fortuitous vacation at a Rosewood resort in Cabo, Mexico got her online shopping boutique, Luxury Gifts Bermuda, noticed. Before she knew it, she’d landed a physical space at Rosewood Tucker’s Point.
“I was standing by the pool and someone overheard me saying I was from Bermuda. He worked for Rosewood and we got to talking. I told him about my business and he called someone here and said they had to meet with me.”
Mrs Conway is dominating an untapped market, bringing in unique brands such as Stylestalker, Asilio, Camilla and Pared from Australia.
The boutique owner and buyer talked Lifestyle through the trends she predicts will carry us through spring and summer 2016.
She pulls out a denim romper that covers all the current ones: the fraying, proper, stiff denim that we wore in the nineties has replaced the softer, chambray denim from seasons past.
It’s by Saylor, she explains, a boutique brand from New York. The cut-out in the middle is in line with the rise in skin-baring details like deep V necks.
She suggests a fringed saddle bag to go with the look. “Fringe is still in,” she said. “It’s not going anywhere. We’re seeing it all the way through to fall as well.”
Next up is Stylestalker’s neon version of the slip dresses now in.
“Bright yellow, bold in-your-face primary colours are very popular. And maxis are still going strong.
“One of the most popular trends, which is no secret to anyone, is the off-the-shoulder top. It started in spring, it carries through all the way to fall. We’re seeing that from everyone, in all different materials and prints.”
Generally, summer trends haven’t varied far from what stylists were peddling for spring, she added.
“The soft denims, jumpsuits, the rompers, the cutouts, the off-the-shoulder; the brights are a little bit more summery.”
When it comes to stylish swimsuits, the terminology is changing.
“People are really changing the terminology of a one-piece. You’re now hearing the term ‘single-piece’, which really reflects the idea that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a full coverage one-piece. There are so many cutouts that often look like they’re bikinis, but they’re just a single-piece item. And sexy — to show that they’re not just for moms, even though, thank goodness, they’re in style now,” laughed the mother-of-two. “I don’t know what I would do without them.”
She pulls out a timeless black rash guard by Orlebar Brown, “the Rolls Royce of rash guards”.
“We live in a very sun-conscious, health-conscious time. Last year, we saw a huge injection of studies on sunscreen and the chemicals that are in sunscreen. It’s super important for people who are in the sun for too long to find a stylish rash guard and wear organic sunscreen and reapply over and over.”
She’s especially careful to bring in environmentally friendly products that are free from controversial chemicals, and give back.
Coola sunscreen is an organic range of products and her bkr water bottles are BPA-free and phthalate-free.
“The biggest fashion item for every season is to drink lots and lots of water. Nothing else can make you feel or look more beautiful,” she said.
The business will be expanding in June to other locations.
