Findlay remains positive despite Honduras drubbing
Bermuda coach Michael Findlay insists that the island can still make it to the next stage of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
After two matches in the second round, Bermuda find themselves bottom of group A with just one point secured from their first two games after a 1-1 draw away to Antigua & Barbuda and a 6-1 defeat at home to Honduras.
Bermuda have a year to wait for their final two group matches, playing Cayman Islands on June 4, 2025, and Cuba six days later, but Findlay expects the island to make it through to the next stage of the qualification process.
“If you look at this group, it was never going to be sorted out in the first two games,’’ Findlay said.
“Next June is what it's about and this group is not going to be settled until June 10, 2025. I expect there will be a couple of other results just like ours with Honduras and other teams.
“We have to look at where we need to be and we need to be in second place at the end of June, which puts us into round three.
“That’s what we have to focus on, and we take the lessons, the positives and the negatives.
“We go away and we work with players individually, but we need to get ready for September because we all want this team to go to the Gold Cup.
“I've been to the Gold Cup three times and I want to go for the fourth time. From that point of view, I think it’s really important that we get ourselves organised and we know who we’re playing in September and November.
“We know what results we need and we have players in this group that are extremely capable of delivering. We made it clear from the very beginning that we need to be optimistic about our football.
“We don’t want pessimists and we want to build from things that happened, both positively and negative.”
