A group of 26 young Bermudian footballers will get the opportunity to train at the home ground of Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers and St George's Park, the home of England teams.

The batch, comprisingf under-9 boys and under-13 girls leaves today for a one-week developmental tour to Britain with the Leo Burgess Football Academy.

Burgess, the founder and technical director of the academy, outlined what he has arranged for the budding stars.

“Our players will train for one day at Wolverhampton Wanderers and then they’ll train at St George's Park, the England training ground,’’ Burgess said.

“This is a developmental experience for the players where they’ll experience playing against international opposition.

“The players are also going on different stadium tours, such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool.

“It’s very important for the young players to go on this trip because at certain ages players have to be exposed to higher levels of opposition and coaching.

“That’s not to say our coaches cannot coach at this level, it’s just different perspectives they get.

“They’re getting coaching from Wolverhampton Wanderers coaches who've experienced a lot in the game.

“It’s just building on from what they've been getting and helping them grow. We hope that when they come back, they’ll be able to apply whatever they learnt to their locals clubs.”

LB Academy are also sending two boys teams, the under-11s and under-15s for the IberCup in Costa Brava, Spain, from July 6 to 14.

“IberCup is a bit more of a competitive tournament to test the boys against international opposition,’’ he said.

“We are taking 31 players to Spain. We have a close relationship with the organisers, so we try to enter teams every year. Last year we took an under-13 boys team and they got knocked out in the quarter-finals.

“The boys going to Spain will also have training sessions with professional clubs as well.

“Their training session is going to be with Espanyol and then they’ll go and visit Barcelona’s stadium, Camp Nou, before they get into the tournament.”
