Nahki Wells predicts fierce competition for spots in Bristol City attack
Nahki Wells is bracing himself for what he anticipates will be fierce competition for starting spots in Bristol City’s attack for the upcoming season.
City head coach Liam Manning has strengthened his front line during the summer with the recent additions of forwards Fally Mayulu and Yu Hirakawa.
Frenchman Mayulu has joined from Austrian outfit Rapid Wien on a four-year dea,l while Hirakawa has been loaned from Japanese side Machida Zelvia with a view to signing a permanent deal later in the season.
“Yu and Fally are great additions and two players that are going to bring a lot to the squad,” Wells said on Bristol City’s official X account.
“Everyone is quite certain of that and looking forward to working with them. We can already see the quality they both bring and we can be positive about things moving forward.
“Fally will be a competitor of mine, but it's a squad game. We all need each other to propel, so I will be pushing him and he will be pushing me along with Tommy Conway, Belli [Sam Bell] and Corns [Harry Cornick[, other players that can play in those attacking positions and wehave a really competitive edge in the squad.
“Everyone knows that they can’t take their foot off the ball and the gaffer is driving that competitive edge from now and in a few weeks; time I think all the hard work will come to fruition.”
Wells and the rest of the City squad are nearing the end of a five-day training camp in Portugal, where they have been put through their paces by coaching staff over the past several days.
“It's been really good and it's been a really tough week as you’d expect,” Wells said.
“There have been a lot of competitive days and a lot of double sessions, but the gaffer has been good in terms of how he has varied the week. We are a bit on our last legs but we know we have one day to go.
“Equally the most important thing is leaving no stone unturned and I would say that the gaffer has got the balance very well. It’s been very competitive and it's been difficult.
“The fitness staff and sports science staff have pushed us and we know now that we are close to the end of the week and so it's all about finishing strong.”
City finished eleventh in the Sky Bet Championship last season.
