Jya Ratteray-Smith and Victoria Davis thrilled to score in Belize
Jya Ratteray-Smith and Victoria Davis, goalscorers for the Bermuda senior women’s football team in their 2-0 friendly victory over Belize in Belmopan on Sunday, have shared their delight at finding the net.
Ratteray-Smith opened the scoring for coach Naquita Robinson’s side in the twelfth minute before Davis slotted in from a free kick 72 minutes into the match.
The win allowed the Lady Gombey Warriors to earn revenge after they lost by the same scoreline to Belize three days earlier as Robinson used the two matches to prepare her team for upcoming Concacaf assignments.
Ratteray-Smith, 22, expressed her gratitude for getting a chance to showcase her skills in a friendly.
“It felt great to score and help the team accomplish one of the goals set out by our coaches, to put away our chances,” Ratteray-Smith said.
“We find ourselves in goalscoring positions and don’t always take advantage of them, so to score felt really good.
“It benefits us to have these types of matches, which allow us to apply the principles of training against foreign opposition.
“Living in Bermuda makes it difficult to get these types of games on a regular basis. We tend to train without the opportunity to play against these types of opponents.
“I feel like we improved upon our first match and was able to get the win. Our team is ambitious and eager to improve, so this was a good opportunity for us.”
Davis has often proven how deadly she can be in attack and produced a superb strike to seal the win for Bermuda. The 25-year-old viewed the friendly matches as being vital for the side’s growth.
“Scoring for your country will always be an incredible feeling,” she said. “Any contribution to the team is always a great achievement and I’m excited for more opportunities in the future.
“These international friendlies are crucial to help us keep moving forward and keep being able to grow as a team as they create opportunities for us as players to get more familiar with international players and their strengths.
“These games allow for us, and for coaches, to see different movements within the team and different players, and be able to implement what we have done in training at an international level. We look forward to hopefully getting more international friendlies in the future.”
