Lady Trojans target dynasty after league title threepeat
More sparkle has been added to Silver City after Somerset went undefeated in wrapping up their third consecutive women’s league title this season.
Danvers Seymour Jr’s charges recorded nine wins and were held to a draw once on the way to becoming the first team in more than a decade to achieve the treble since former powerhouse DRC Rude Girls.
“As a coach, it is one of the most memorable achievements of my coaching journey,” a proud Seymour told The Royal Gazette.
“The team have quality and harmony and they are really competitive. They want to win every game and defensively they are very sound, which always give us a chance.
“Winning is never guaranteed, but we know if we work hard enough we can achieve our goal.”
Somerset had added incentive to put their best foot forward having previously been overlooked for individual awards despite achieving the league and knockout cup double in back-to-back seasons.
“One of the main sources of motivation for us was that we haven’t received the credit we feel we deserved after being undefeated for two years with conceding only five goals in both seasons combined,” Seymour added.
“Winning the BFA women’s league and knockout double during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the players and coaching staff seemed to never earn any individual accolades. Losing out on the season MVP, Best Defender and Coach of the Year awards, it still felt like we had something to prove.”
Prove something they did with a formidable squad boasting national team players led by new captain Symira Lowe-Darrell, who is equally as thrilled to have guided the club to their first league title threepeat.
“It feels amazing and it always feels like a sense of accomplishment,” she said.
“In the beginning we struggled for numbers, as some of our girls were still overseas. But we stuck to the game plan and we kept the main goal in mind. We said we can, we will and we did just that.”
Lowe-Darrell took on a massive responsibility after replacing Bermuda team-mate Jya Ratteray-Smith as captain on a full-time basis at the beginning of the season.
“For this being my first time as captain for the whole season, I wanted to keep the legacy going from the two years before, and I didn’t want to be the first captain to not win the league,” she added.
“We knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, but we always had the winning mindset to reach our end goal.”
When asked were there any doubts Somerset could complete a hat-trick of league titles, the experienced forward said: “As an athlete, there will always be times when doubt might creep in.
“However, I know what my team are capable of when we are all dialled in. Once we started winning, I no longer had those doubts.
“Most of the team are national squad players and for us football is what we love to do. So it’s not a matter of how we can stay motivated; it’s more so how can we keep our levels high, not only for Somerset, but for the national team as well.”
Looking ahead to next season, coach Seymour plans to start rebuilding his squad with a view to the future.
“It’s time to freshen up the squad with younger players,” he said.
“We’re looking to recruit for the upcoming 2025 season and I have my eye on a few young players that I would like to add to the team.
“We had two young additions this season, Nyla Goodchild and A’Maya DeRosa, who can help grow the team.
“Also it may be time to consider a team tour abroad.”
Lowe-Darrell has her eyes set on continuing her team’s league dominance.
“Our expectations are to go for the fourpeat, which I don’t think has been done before,” she said.
“Hopefully, we can keep our core team with a few good additions in the right areas.”
