Leroy Lewis scores four as Hamilton Parish rout Wolves
Hamilton Parish 6 Wolves 1
Four goals from Leroy Lewis helped Hamilton Parish come from a goal down to overwhelm Wolves in a Dudley Eve group match at Devonshire Recreation Club last night.
Lewis scored his goals in the thirteenth, 36th, 40th and 59th minutes, with Parish captain Aaron Nelson and Shayne Hollis also on target.e Morricko Iris scored the only goal for Wolves.
While pleased with the big win, Parish coach Sergio Goater felt there was plenty for his side to work on.
“It’s always good to start with a convincing win,” Goater said.
“It’s still preseason, so there were a lot of mistakes to iron out and the fitness levels will come with game time.
“We know that they are a team coming up and they were going to be aggressive at the start, that excitement was always going to be there. Once we came into our own, we started dominating the game.
“Leroy was definitely the X factor for us. He scored four and he wanted to come off, he could have scored more goals.
“He’s definitely going to be the one for us this year, because he is back. Last year, he was on and off island, so a lot of players haven't faced him.
“When it comes to tougher opponents, he is someone that can make a difference for us. As a team, we still have to do a lot more, we must learn to manage matches.”
Parish reached the Dudley Eve semi-finals last season and Goater wants to go further this season despite the fact they have been drawn in a tough group alongside Dandy Town and PHC, who drew 1-1 last night.
“We’re looking to try and win it but it’s a tough group,’’ Goater said.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge for us. We have to rise to the occasion against the bigger teams, you don't want to be always playing against easy opponents.”
For Marcelos Thomas, the Wolves coach, it was a baptism of fire for his side as they plan their return to the Premier Division.
“It was a rough introduction back into the Premier Division,” he said. “We did have some good signs, the guys possessed the ball well. In this league, mistakes get punished and that’s what happened today.
“A few mistakes got punished but our players still went out there and put the best foot forward. We’ll continue working on improving going forward. In the First Division, you get away with some of the mistakes, but in the Premier Division you can’t.
“It was a matter of minimising mistakes, which we didn’t do, and they capitalised on those mistakes.”
Wolves had a dream start when Iris headed in a perfect cross from Torque Outerbridge in the eighth minute.
Parish had their equaliser three minutes later, Lewis found a lot space and surged into the box to rifle the ball into the net. Goater’s side then had the lead for the first time in the match when Nelson struck from close range.
It could have been three goals for Parish in the seventeenth minute, but Gianni Burgess's effort came off the upright
Lewis got his second in the 36th minute after weaving his way into the box to score and got his hat-trick just five minutes later with a header from a Jordan Outerbridge cross.
He got his fourth before the hour mark, when he ghosted in from the blind side to head the ball into the net from a rebound and after he Lewis came off to a round of applause with four minutes left, Hollis put the icing on the cake with the sixth goal a minute before the end.
