Bermudian footballers help teams to progress in FA Cup

A number of Bermudian footballers helped their teams progress to the latest round of the FA Cup at the weekend.

Just a few days after being part of the senior men’s squad that lost to Dominican Republic and beat Antigua and Barbuda in Nations League competition, Kole Hall, Kane Crichlow and Keziah Martin were all on the winning side for their respective teams in the FA Cup second qualifying round.

Kole Hall came on as a 56th minute substitute for Chorley with the score at 0-0 in their away tie against Mossley and was a key influence on the game as his side eventually ran out 3-0 winners.

With six qualifying rounds to navigate before the FA Cup first round, Chorley still have four games before getting in to the main draw and will play away at Spennymoor Town in the third qualifying round on September 28.

Kane Crichlow, who scored Bermuda’s winning goal against Antigua last Tuesday, also came on as a second-half replacement for Chelmsford City as they beat Tilbury 2-0 in an all-Essex tie. The reward for that win is a home tie against Bromsgrove.

Keziah Martin played the final ten minutes for Rushall Olympic, who progressed to the next round after beating Sheffield FC 5-0. They have been drawn at home to Anstey Nomads in the next stage of the competition.

While those three Bermudians were successful, Willie Clemons, who made his return to the national squad for their latest fixtures, tasted defeat as an unused substitute when his Felixstowe & Walton side were knocked out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 defeat to Canvey Island.

Away from the FA Cup, Reggie Lambe came on as a substitute as Braintree Town lost 3-1 to high-flyers Barnet in the Vanarama National League on Saturday. Lambe scored the winner in last season’s play-off final to earn Braintree Town promotion to the division just one below the Football League

Nahki Wells was an unused substitute as Bristol City lost 3-0 away to Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship. That was City’s second 3-0 defeat in a row after they lost by the same scoreline to Derby County before the international break and they now sit seventeenth in the league

In the National Women’s Soccer League, LeiLanni Nesbeth came on in the 61st minute as Chicago Red Stars picked up a 1-0 win against Portland Thorns. The victory means Nesbeth’s team are eighth in the 14-team league on 26 points after playing 20 games.

From those on the pitch to those in the dugout and Khano Smith’s Rhode Island lost 1-0 to Orange County in the USL Championship Eastern Division on Saturday. That leaves Smith’s side eighth in the 12-team division on 37 points.
