Premier Division kicks off on Saturday

The first fixture of the new Premier Division takes place today with an intriguing rematch at Goose Gosling Field.

Dandy Town take on Wolves at 9pm, but the two teams will do well to match the excitement of their Dudley Eve Trophy game in midweek, when Wolves came from 3-0 down with 20 minutes to play to remarkably win 4-3.

Town coach Kyle Lightbourne is sure to have learnt plenty from his side’s three Dudley Eve Trophy matches, in which they drew with PHC and lost to Hamilton Parish before capitulating against Wolves to finish bottom of group A.

Parish, the only team with a 100 per cent record in the Dudley Eve group stages were originally supposed to be in action today, taking on newly promoted Devonshire Colts at Police Field at 3pm, but that game has been rescheduled for Monday night at Devonshire Rec at 7pm.

Both teams have been in decent preseason form, qualifying for the Dudley Eve Trophy semi-finals. It will be interesting to see how Ray Jones’s newcomers fare against an in-form team on their return to the top flight.

North Village, who lost to PHC in the final-day title decider last season, missed out on the chance to compete in the Dudley Eve semi-finals when they were docked points for fielding ineligible goalkeeper Detre Bell against Young Men’s Social Club earlier in the competition.

Kenny Thompson’s side were due to get their season started with an away match tomorrow at Police Field against Social Club, who they originally beat 1-0 in the Dudley Eve Trophy before their administrative blunder was spotted, but that game has been moved to Devonshire Rec at 9pm on Monday night.

Tomorrow’s other games see St George’s, who are coached by club president Mishael Paynter, begin their campaign away at Devonshire Cougars (4pm), while Paget, who have improved every season under coach Antwan Russell, have a home game at Southampton Oval (4pm) against champions PHC.
