Somerset Trojans get season off to flyer
Somerset Trojans coach Jensen Rogers has hailed his team’s 3-0 away win against Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval on Sunday.
Trojans dominated the First Division contest and Rogers was delighted to see his team get the 2024-25 campaign off to a flying start.
“It was a very good start to the season,” Rogers told The Royal Gazette. “It’s always nice to score a few and not concede.”
Midfielder Kymani McNeil opened the scoring and also had a hand in his team’s second goal as his free kick led to a Jahkai Hill own goal. Experienced striker Tahj Wade added the third.
While delighted by the outcome of the match, Rogers has urged his players not to get carried away.
“It’s the first game, so we are not getting ahead of ourselves,” Rogers said. “We know we have a few things to improve on and it’s just now up to us to put in the work for the remainder of the season.
“This is just the start, so we have to be consistent. The team that usually wins the league or get promoted are the teams that are consistent, so we have to keep focused and do our part.”
Trojans are seeking a swift return to the Premier Division after being relegated along with X-Roads Warriors last season.
Also making a perfect start to the league campaign last weekend were Shield holders St David’s Warriors and Boulevard Blazers.
St David’s beat Vasco 3-1 at Goose Gosling Field on Sunday, with former national team player Keishen Bean leading the charge with a brace as Keishon Wilson grabbed their other goal. Calum Maule replied for home side Vasco.
Boulevard endured a tougher test, edging Somerset Eagles 2-1 at Goose Gosling Field 24 hours earlier.
Shaquille Dill and Khary Easton were on target for Boulevard, while Michael Emery converted for Eagles.
Robin Hood were awarded a 3-0 result after rivals BAA forfeited their first match last Friday.
“It’s a bit unfortunate,” said newly installed Robin Hood coach Cecoy Robinson. “The players, as well as myself, were looking to get our first match in the books, but we move on.
“Nothing we could do about it and now we have to switch our focus for this week’s match-ups. We have had another week of preparation for our upcoming match against Boulevard and will be looking to use the hunger of not playing to put on a good performance this week.”
